House of the Future

© 1999. Last revised 06/Apr/1999.

The House of the Future at Disneyland, sponsored by Monsanto, opened in Tomorrowland on 12th June 1957, and closed in December 1967.

The house was built on a cantilevered design, and was built entirely out of plastics, and equiped with the latest (for the 1950s and '60s) in furniture and household appliances, designed to show what a house of the future may look like.

Eventually by 1967 most homes had caught up with and overtaken the supposedly futuristic designs, so the exhibit was removed pice by piece (it proved to be too well built to be dismantled any other way).
