Osborne Family Lights
[Disney Vacation Planner]
At A Glance |
Only operational between Thanksgiving
and the start of January, but a definite must-see attraction
during this time. |
The Osborne Family Lights are regularly on display
over the christmas holiday period in the Disney-MGM Studios over
the christmas holidays, being lit at about 18:00 (6pm), after
which the display remains open until 20:00 (8pm) each night.
The now-famous Spectacle of Lights at Disney-MGM Studios
returns each christmas holiday with enough bulbs to light several
city blocks and more... all concentrated on the park's 760-foot
long Residential Street, Washington Square backlot, and expanding
more each year. Championed by Arkansas businessman Jennings Osborne,
who received worldwide attention for the Little Rock light show
he created a decade ago for his daughter.
"This is for all the children and families who never
had a chance to see our display back home," said Osborne once,
"This is what the holiday season is all about."
The Osborne Family Lights display includes over 178
angels, 50 bells, 20 snowmen, trains, sleighs, the 70-foot-high,
100,000-light Tree of Lights, two 30-foot-high carousels and 45
lighted Mickey Mouse figures. Osborne promises even more surprises
each year.
The best time to see the Osborne Family Lights is about
10 - 15 minutes before the end of Fantasmic, because most people
in the park will be locked into the Fantasmic show, often leaving
Residential Street very quiet.
New to the 1998 display is a 3-d effect provided through
the use of special '3d glasses'. Some of the lights used cast
a small 'Angel' picture when viewed through the glasses, although
if viewed without the glasses they appear as perfectly normal
fairy lights. (It is possible to catch the effect on video by
carefully holding one lens of the glasses across the front of
the camcorder lens, but it's quite difficult to capture the effect
to it's full.
